Artist Residency and Wood Fired Soda Kiln Workshop April 2-26, 2023

Interested in expanding my visual vocabulary and gaining technical experience landed me in Denmark at Guldagergaard, International Ceramic Research Center. Renowned for their Kiln yard with the largest selections of kilns in Northern Europe. I was honored to be accepted to study and participate in the soda workshop.

My intent is learning, seeing, experimenting, and pushing my current body of work.

Research, discovery, and experimentation with the effects of soda firing techniques drove my interest in the Soda Kiln workshop. Exploring ideas of identity, worth and purpose in vessel form, layered expressions of brokenness and restoration in torn, marred, irregular organic forms. Juxtapositioning the broken, torn and marred with beauty and movement and ideas of healing and restoration. The “damaged and distressing” effects I believe the soda would render on the surface of the work would expand my current visual vocabulary. Burned, smokey, fractured surfaces draw my interest. My intent is learning, seeing, experimenting, and pushing my current body of work. The results are amazing and another layer of vocabulary and expression incorporated into my work.

Masterful work spraying the soda into the kiln by Ana Master Kiln Yard Technician!
